Problem running Quake in XP SP3

I know the game is old, but anyway, I installed the game fine and followed the useual advice for this game by running in Compatibility mode by selecting Windows 95 but instead I get an error when trying to run it, which is:

Unable to link to KERNEL32.DLL

MGL fatal error:

Cannot load WDIRxxF.dll
